Garage Living -- Reclaim your Garage!

February 5, 2007, Vaughan, ON, Canada -- Like many Canadian families, the Dermer family’s garage was a disaster. Toys, boxes, sports equipment and gardening tools took up so much space the van could barely squeeze in there.

"I’m busy, my husband’s busy we both work, plus we’ve got tons of activities with the kids," says Barbara Dermer. "We just didn’t have the time to clear out all the junk and have a garage sale."

So they did what any family would do they got professional help. The Dermers employed a team of experts to assess their garage’s organizational needs. They wanted a complete solution someone who could clear out the old clutter and custom design storage space that would allow them to know exactly where things were, exactly when they were needed.

Enter Aaron Cash, Parag Shah and Frank Spano. These three young entrepreneurs have taken the home organization concept to the next level.

"A lot has changed in peoples living habits over the years. The garage isn’t just a storage space any more it’s a workplace for hobbyists, an entrance to the home, a place to keep the car clean," says Frank Spano. "It is increasingly important to families that the garage be more inviting, organized, safe and attractive. It needs to be part of their home."

Spano, Shah and Cash first met while attending the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario and struck upon the idea for Garage Living shortly thereafter.

After working out of Shah’s own garage for eight months, the three young men formed a partnership with Mike Albo, co-owner of Organized Interiors and Better Living Products. The combination of Mike’s two decades of knowledge in the home organization and renovation industry allowed them to open Ontario’s first retail showroom dedicated exclusively to garage organization solutions. Garage Living was born.

Their business is based on the goal of providing homeowners with a complete solution to the organization of their garage. The garage is the biggest room of the house and, in most cases, the most neglected. It is too often the dumping ground of the house inevitably ending up in disarray causing stress and confusion.

Garage Living Experts help clients one-on-one to design a customized garage organization solution. They meet with clients to discuss ideas and visit their home before producing detailed drawings of the proposed renovation.

Clients can see and touch samples of what their finished garage will look like through Garage Living’s concept showroom, which is the first of its kind in North America. Clients can browse through real, organized garages featuring custom cabinets, overhead storage, wall storage and flooring options. All these items are delivered and installed by qualified professionals.

And topping off the complete solution Garage Living will remove and dispose of any junk that was cluttering up the garage and their experts will add the finishing touches such as paint, drywall and stylish lighting options.

For the Dermers, the results were a clean, organized, stress free garage for the first time in over 20 years at their home.

"It was full service right from the start," says Mrs. Dermer. "From the removal of our old junk to the Garage Living experts presenting us with designs made specifically for our garage, and clean and quick installation, they made organizing that mess look easy."

"The overhead and wall storage free up so much floor space. We even have room for the kids’ bikes and I can get my golf clubs without moving the car," adds Mr. Dermer. "And I’m glad we didn’t have to put our items into self-storage, that option was expensive, and inconvenient. This way, we’ve still got everything at our fingertips when we need it, at a fraction of the self-storage cost."

Garage Living’s showroom is open Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and is located at 201 Chrislea Road, Vaughan. In-home consultations can be booked at 1-877-850-8557.

Lenbrook -- Are school lockdowns enough to ensure safety?

February 5, 2007, Pickering, ON, Canada -- The rise of violence in schools has been on the increase for the past decade. Recent shootings in Montreal and throughout the United States have students and teachers wondering how they can keep schools safe!

Schools such as Burnhamthorpe Collegiate Institute have initiated a lockdown practice. This is a procedure implemented by many large American schools following the 1999 shooting at Columbine, Colorado.

In crisis situations, such as an armed gunman roaming the school halls, all classroom and school doors are immediately locked preventing anyone from leaving or entering. Blinds are pulled and lights turned off to make it difficult for a shooter to locate targets. This is increasingly becoming the norm for several of the Greater Toronto school boards. But is it enough?

Jennifer Brown, editor of Canadian Security News, reports that according to Minaz Jivraj, a Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School board security and safety officer, "If police and security officials know something is happening at a school, the question parents and community members will inevitably ask is: What did you do to make sure my child was safe?"

Besides lockdowns, is there anything else that can be done to ensure security? David Poirier of Lenbrook, Canada says there is.

"Maintaining order and enhancing student and staff safety are the reasons why schools, colleges, and universities are now using two-way radios in addition to their phone and intercom systems. Two-way radios are part of a solution to many areas of school activity and student safety," says Poirier.

Putting two-way radios in the hands of teachers and school staff improves communication and safety. Staff using two-way radios can alert school security to potentially dangerous or suspicious situations quickly. One user can alert all staff of any situation in seconds. Communicating in a crisis situation is immediate, discreet, and effective.

"It also means that teachers or staff not in classrooms, are notified of the emergency," continues Poirier.

About two-way radios, Shelley Jones, Administrative Assistant at Ecole Greenfield School, Edmonton, Alberta agrees, "This has become a great tool for communication and safety in our school."

Two-way radios like the Motorola radios are easy to use. Unlike phones which are one-to-one, a two-way radio can alert as many people as there are two-way radios. Group talk is important to get immediate action.

When there is a security concern teachers and staff can talk to all classes or staff at the same time. Two-way radios are the only form of communication that offers group talk as opposed to one to one.

With tighter budgets, business two-way radios are an affordable solution to staying in touch in areas of security concerns, and focus on incident prevention.

Garage Living -- To Upgrade or Not to Upgrade...

February 5, 2007, Vaughan, ON, Canada -- This dilemma confronts all new home buyers. However, there are some desirable upgrades that are yet to be made available. Builders already offer new home buyers upgrades to their carpets, flooring or kitchen cabinets. But when it comes to the garage all that’s offered is concrete floors and barren walls.

Times have changed. Today, garages are not just a place to park vehicles or store yard equipment, they’re an extension of the home.

Imagine being able to give those searching out new homes a garage floor that is both, decorative and stylish rather than unfinished concrete. Imagine, being able to provide new home buyers either epoxy or PVC tiles that; reduce floor damage caused by road salt and other chemicals, can be insulated providing more comfort and use of the space, and simplifies garage clean-up allowing for easy maintenance.

Home designers, architects, builders and contractors are realizing that today’s home buyers want a garage that is decorative with practical storage units rather than an unfinished garage with zero storage facilities. The trend is moving towards offering the purchaser the opportunity to organize and store their belongings the moment they move into a new home, avoiding all the clutter from day one.

A recent article printed in the King Weekly entitled "Women want a fashionable garage" speaks about how women desire garage doors to be aesthetically appealing. However, while it is important for the exterior of the garage to look good, today’s savvy owner wants the interior of the garage to be just as attractive and functional.

It makes perfect sense for builders and contractors to make garage upgrades available. After all, their clients can incorporate whatever upgrades they choose into a mortgage enabling them to obtain their dream home now rather than later.

As an upgrade or an add-on, a builder could offer a buyer decorative and stylish garage floors, customized cabinetry or secured storage that is mounted on the garage wall.

In response to the growing focus on the garage, there are a number of companies that specialize specifically in garage renovation. One such company is Garage Living, located in Vaughan, Garage Living offers a complete assortment of products and services to create functional and attractive garages.

"The garage is the biggest room of the house and, in most cases, the most neglected," says Parag Shah, President of Garage Living. "It is too often the dumping ground of the house inevitably ending up in disarray causing stress and confusion."

Garage Living’s ’state of the art’ showroom is the first of its kind in North America. It provides builders, contractors and designers a place where they can see and touch samples of what finished garages will look like. The showroom is open Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and is located at 201Chrislea Road, Vaughan.
