Healthy feet are the first step toward a healthy body

June 2, 2010, TORONTO – Feet are the foundation to the entire body. Just as a building's structural integrity depends on a solid footing or foundation, the body's health is largely dependent upon the health of the feet.

Foot deformities, infections and injuries not only limit mobility, but detrimentally affect the knees, hips and other parts of the body. Only recently have people begun to realize the significance of the connection between healthy feet and a healthy body.

This is not newly discovered information, as Socrates years ago pointed out the integral connection between the two when he said, "When our feet hurt, we hurt all over."

"Foot problems can decrease a person's ability to enjoy many activities in life," says Ray Rasouli, who for over 25 years has specialized in the design and manufacture of orthopedic footwear.  "Fortunately, many of these foot problems can be easily prevented or treated by using properly fitted orthopedic footwear, custom foot orthotics or other various foot care solutions."

Many people live their lives with unnecessary acute or chronic pain in their feet, ankles, knees, hips, back and even into the base of the neck. Early in life, symptoms go unnoticed, but it's the cumulative affect or wear and tear that eventually leads to discomfort and pain. Since all these health problems could stem from issues with the feet, a quick visit to a foot specialist could avoid or resolve them.

Companies such as Walk'N Comfort, located at the intersection of Jane Street and Rutherford Road in Vaughn, specialize in foot care. They believe that a healthy body starts with healthy feet.

"Like a finger print, a foot is unique. Every arch is a different height and a different length – one leg could be slightly longer than the other – each, if left without custom fitted footwear for proper support, could lead to health problems later on," says Ray Rasouli. "Assuring that your feet are healthy and kept that way is quite simple – get an assessment by a professional Chiropodist."

"A Chiropodist is a primary care professional practicing in podiatric medicine that specializes in assessment, management and prevention of diseases and disorders of the foot, and is an essential member of the inter-professional healthcare team at Walk'N Comfort," says Mike Gaspar, Manager, Walk'N Comfort. "In an effort to help people know whether they need orthodics, we provide free foot evaluations – no strings attached."

Once an evaluation is done and it's determined that an orthodic is needed, the client chooses whether they want to proceed and have one made. Once the decision is made to move forward, a cast is taken of the client's foot.

Typically, in the orthodic's industry, 98 per cent of the casts are sent to an orthodics lab and take several days and even weeks to produce. Walk'N Comfort is unique in that patients can take advantage of their industry leading 3D custom orthotic casting, molding and fabrication system. This state-of-the-art equipment allows them to keep their foot casts on-site, and enables them to produce a finished product in as little as forty-five minutes.

"In the end, it's all about the experience," says Mike Gaspar. "The patient gets friendly service and quality custom footwear, but at a fraction of the costs of what's typical in the industry."
