Pesticides May Cure, but Prevention is King

Natural lawn-care gets to the root of the problem

June 19, 2007, OSHAWA – Research indicates over 50 million kilograms of pesticides are applied to lawns in Canada each year and only a small proportion of this amount is estimated to actually reach its intended target. This considered, it’s easy to be concerned about our environment.

We use chemical pesticides to kill pests, which inhabit our lawns, be they insects or weeds. This process kills natural predators which feed on other pests as well as impacting the natural balance of healthy soil. Typical consumers combat continued poor lawn conditions by over applying the same chemical pesticides and fertilizers, therefore perpetuating the vicious cycle.

The fact that pesticides are known to be harmful to the health of children, pets and the environment, is frightening but they are continually used as a means of pest prevention and are available over the counter at most stores across Canada.

Provincial and municipal governments are recognizing the necessity to curb chemical pesticide use. They understand that by substituting more ecologically coherent products, a sound step towards a healthy environment is taken. Over 200 municipalities in Canada implemented legislation, which bans the use of chemical fertilizers.

The solutions are available to us now; we have the expertise and the products to effectively and ecologically care for our lawns, and public spaces. “It’s all about changing the world one lawn at a time,” says Lorelei Hepburn, president of The Environmental Factor. “By combining sound maintenance practices and premium quality organic products, homeowners don’t have to choose between weed free lawns and healthy families.”
